The Analytical Group is responsible for analysis of a variety of materials collected from manufacturing operations, customer troubleshooting efforts, and product development projects. The technician must operate a variety of instruments with limited supervision, including chemical analysis, microscopy, and QC instrumentation. The job requires that the technician quickly master existing sample analysis procedures and accurately interpret collected data. Compliance with safe work practices and chemical hygiene rules is mandatory.

The work includes:

• Processing and preparing samples
• Operating various precision analytical instruments
• Following analysis procedures, data entry, and reporting results with a high level of accuracy and precision
• Safe handling of chemicals related to papermaking and chemical analysis
• Minor instrument and equipment troubleshooting
• Sitting and standing for extended periods of time

Minimum education and skills requirements:

• B.S. in a science field, or an A.S. with equivalent experience
• Knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry, experience with analytical techniques in a lab setting
• Strong organizational skills to handle multiple short-term projects
• Ability to multitask and reprioritize as needed
• Comfort with computers and aptitude to learn instrument-specific software
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel
• Comfort working independently and as part of a larger cooperative team
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Skills/Traits:

• Experience in optical microscopy, spectroscopy, solvent extraction, GC/MS, and/or XRF
• Equipment/instrument troubleshooting experience
• Creative and critical thinking/problem solving skills
• Ability to apply accrued industry knowledge to future analyses
